AWE’s orientation day was on Thursday, August 24, and on that same day they had a conversation with Hiba, Karar, a local business consultant and mentor. The discussion focused on how to build a successful business on your own. AWE women shared their own business stories with Hiba, including how they started their small businesses, their financial situation at the time, and how they persevered.

One of the girls whose story they found inspiring was Firdowsa Abdurrahman, who owns one of the most influential small businesses in Mogadishu. Firdowsa started her business with only $300, but she kept going because of her perseverance and hard work. She now owns a successful small business where she plans and manages events and makes personalized, customized gifts and printings.
